Do you think that the generation of black art has declined in terms of contemporary art?
There were so many black artists coming out during the Renaissance Harlem. Where the fire is gone? Or is it still there? Agree.disagree? And in terms of this I doubt he was thinking more in terms of visual artists, but thanks for your input.
What has decreased is the willingness of people to look around, and not the will of the people to come and be cutting edge. Toni Morrison is Toni Morrison, and other important voices of the past decades include Amiri Baraka and Ishmael Reed, none of which is silenced. In fact, my sister decided she did not like because of Lenny Kravitz American Woman – and I find myself increasingly attracted to him in both an American and a Caribbean context (I think his mother was there and that is where you live). The voices are out there, and places are out there and much of what missing is the audience. Education is power. Pickup.
