The Sight and Sound Top Ten Poll 1952
British film magazine Sight & Sound decennial survey first of the ten best films of all time for the world's most eminent film critics began quietly in 1952 under the title of the critics like. Was conducted in response to filmmakers survey taken in 1952 Brussels Referendum.
Interestingly, even then, in 1952, when cinema was still relatively Young, critics complained about the difficulty of the task. "What a terrible idea," "What else to ask," "I feel simply broken, "" impossible, "" barbarians "silly." One critic said 5777 had seen films. How Whittle 5777 to ten? It was also noted on the arbitrariness of the figure. One critic suggests 50, another 2 ½. Fifty-one years later, the task is almost impossible. With each passing year the figure of ten becomes increasingly annoying.
